An older computer can be given a new lease of life by upgrading its memory and/or its hard disk capacity. You may also wish to consider adding a faster processor as well. Additional memory can make a marked difference especially when using the newer memory intensive operating systems. Indeed many computers, such as the Mac mini, ship with insufficient RAM and the first thing many owners do is to boost it to 512Mbytes or even 1Gbyte. A larger hard drive gives much more storage space for music and photos and may also speed things up as well - especially if you fit a faster drive. Early drives were rated at 4200rpm, then they became 5400rpm and today they are 7200rpm with large caches to speed up data transfer. You may also find that you need additional USB or FireWire ports to take advantage of the newer USB 2.0 and FireWire 800 standards. These just plug into one of the existing PCI slots which are found on many computers. Another upgrade is a faster video card especially if you are doing intensive graphic work or playing the latest games. We can advise you on what upgrades are best suited to your particular computer and we can fit it for you as well. In most cases we can ensure that you keep your existing data, emails etc. When upgrading your operating system you may also have to upgrade some programs as well to take advantage of the improved features. | ||||||||||
